AI Frameworks and Futures for Creativity and Collaboration

Brandon Harwood
IBM: Innovation, Design & Strategy Lead

Description

Designers have a rich history of collaborating. We elevate creativity and innovation by actively including others in the design process, and more passively, by taking in the lessons and ideas built by those before us to guide our practice. But has a new collaborator emerged? When AI can gather context and generate ideas, questions, and observations in response, how does this change creative collaboration? Does it change? Can AI make us more creative? Or does it narrow our thinking?

In this workshop, we are going to take a nuanced look at AI, human creativity, and design to explore human-AI co-creation without blindly giving into the hype. You can expect to learn about new interfaces for creative collaboration and introspection, discover potential futures for designers, and use experimental tools and frameworks to design AI solutions that promote human creativity, rather than have the AI 'perform creativity' for us. Join us to co-create the future of innovative, adaptive, and inspired design.

About the speaker

Brandon Harwood is a design and strategy leader exploring technology that empowers creativity and collaboration. At IBM Innovation Studio, he builds cross-disciplinary, radically collaborative workshops that guide teams in thinking creatively and strategically to address complex challenges in emerging technology and business. Additionally, he advises research and design teams, helping them develop internal frameworks and shape public discourse concerning AI design methods and systems that augment creative action, collaboration, communication, and decision-making.

AI Depends On Trust: Designing For Humanized and Relatable Engagement

Gavin Lew
Bold Insight: Managing Partner

Description

Gavin’s presentation will explore the crucial elements to build trust in AI technology as the foundation to a product design strategy instead of final “polishing.” The focus will be to identify and address current AI concerns, critically evaluate AI outputs, and recognize task delegation to strike an effective balance between human and AI roles. Our goal is to arm attendees with the necessary questions to foster trust in AI-driven products.

Key discussion points will include:
- Integrating human needs and values into AI design.
- Employing innovative research methods to gauge user engagement and trust in AI features.
- Aligning AI product marketing with its capabilities to accurately manage user expectations.

We dive into the role of empathy in humanizing AI interactions and take a broad view of AI’s role in technology and society, outlining strategies to brace for its ongoing evolution.

These topics invite you to engage with STRAT’s speakers and audience members throughout the conference to consider how trust dynamics impact the adoption and success of AI technologies. By considering these critical aspects, you’ll receive valuable insights into crafting trustworthy AI products that resonate with users, fostering a stronger bond between technology and humanity.

Preparing Product Teams to Design Impactful AI Experiences

Dr. Mike Oren
Klaviyo: Head of Intelligence Design

Description

Designing for AI in 2024 is similar to designing computer interfaces in the late 80s and early 90s, where designers need some knowledge of the medium to craft the right experiences since our tools are currently insufficient. Collected Consciousness: AI Futures in Creativity and Collaboration

Brandon Harwood
IBM: Innovation, Design & Strategy Lead

Description

As designers, we often build more creative ideas in collaboration with others, particularly through personal reflection on the ideas and lessons gathered along the way. Brian Eno built this into his practice with Oblique Strategies. Simultaneously, large AI systems can generate simulacrums of creative expression built on the ideas and lessons of others while lacking that much-needed ability to reflect. AI cannot (and should not) replace creativity, but can it help us explore lessons and ideas of the past, enhancing our own creative practices?

In this talk, we will examine the current state of AI in creativity, its risks and benefits, and strategies for designing effective human-AI co-creative interfaces that boost human creativity without attempting to replace it. Join us to explore how AI can reveal patterns, challenge assumptions, and inform our design processes, all while maintaining a healthy skepticism, challenging the status quo, and avoiding the hype.

At IBM Innovation Studio, he builds cross-disciplinary, radically collaborative workshops that guide teams in thinking creatively and strategically to address complex challenges in emerging technology and business. How to Screw Up Your AI Project In 8 Easy Steps!

Greg Nudelman
Sumo Logic: Distinguished Designer
